Which Wool Should You Choose for Autumn?

Merino, mohair, or alpaca? Discover which natural wool suits your autumn wardrobe best, with timeless knitwear handcrafted in Spain.

As temperatures start to drop, the question of what to wear next comes back every year. Not all wool is the same, and each type answers a different need depending on the season, the occasion, and how the fabric feels against the skin.

At L'Envers, several natural fibers go into our sweaters and cardigans, and autumn is exactly the season where choosing the right material decides whether a piece gets worn three times or kept for years.

Merino Wool, the Timeless Base

For autumn, merino wool remains the most versatile option.

Fine, soft, and breathable, it works just as well on a chilly morning as on a milder evening, without ever feeling heavier than it needs to.

It naturally regulates body temperature, which makes it comfortable from the first cold snap all the way through the colder days of winter.

A merino wool sweater can be worn on its own during the day or layered under a jacket once the temperature drops further.

Merino wool cardigans suit this transitional season particularly well. You put one on in the morning, tie it around your waist if the sun comes back in the afternoon, then slip it back on as soon as evening falls. This flexibility explains why merino remains the most requested fiber in our workshops as autumn approaches.

Mohair, for a More Refined Touch

Mohair brings a different texture entirely. Sourced from the Angora goat, it is recognizable by its slightly fluffy finish and the way it catches the light.

It suits occasional wear more than heavy daily use, since the fiber requires a bit more care, but it earns its place for weekend outings or days when a simple outfit needs more character.

Our mohair sweaters and cardigans are knitted with a small amount of polyamide, which stabilizes the fiber without taking away its natural lightness.

In autumn, mohair works especially well layered over a thin top or blouse, at a point in the season when temperatures do not yet call for a heavy knit but an extra layer is already welcome.

Curly Alpaca, Featured in Our Luce Vest

Alpaca holds a special place among our materials.

Naturally insulating, lightweight, and silky to the touch, it was once reserved for Inca royalty because the fiber was considered so precious.

This fiber is what makes our Luce vest so distinctive. It is one of the house's signature pieces, knitted to order in our family workshop in Bejar, Spain.

Designed as an easy extra layer, the Luce vest works just as well over a light shirt in early autumn as it does over a thick sweater once temperatures drop further.

This kind of transitional piece is exactly what makes autumn dressing simpler, without needing to overhaul an entire wardrobe.

Match the fiber to the moment, not just the temperature

Choosing Your Autumn Wool Based on How You'll Wear It

For everyday use, at the office or outdoors

Merino remains the safest balance between warmth, comfort, and easy care.

For a special occasion or evening

Mohair adds a dimension merino simply does not have.

For anyone who prioritizes warmth

Especially those living through harsher winters, yak wool is the smarter investment.

What About the Mild Days?

Not every region moves into autumn at the same pace. In places where warmer weather lingers, organic cotton remains a good option before switching fully to wool. It allows for a gentler transition, particularly for accessories like lightweight scarves, before wool scarves become necessary once the first real cold sets in.
