TELL US ABOUT YOU...

I'm Nora, a mid-thirty-something nonprofit communications director living in Brooklyn. I've cycled through a few careers--book editor, academic, university administrator--but my work always comes back to stories. Stories are how we relate to each other as people, how we empathize, how we better understand our own lives and those of people we will never meet. I've spent most of my adult life in New York, with a long stint in Ireland that changed my perspective on being a global citizen.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU ?

I'm incredibly lucky to have collected friendships with some truly extraordinary people. Watching how they grow, how they never stop changing, how they recommit themselves to their values day after day and year after year is astonishing.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU HAVE LOVED FOR A LONG TIME ?

Reading. I go through phases of reading voraciously. And then I go through lulls. But then I'll pick something up and be unable to put it down, sacrificing sleep and socializing to finish the story. And it'll set me off to the races again. Stories have always allowed me to recenter and challenge myself at the same time.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU HAVE RECENTLY REDISCOVERED ?

I recently rediscovered sewing. I wanted to better understand the production of my clothes, so even if I never get to a place where I'm expertly tailoring silk, I'm happy just to be making things with my own hands and appreciating the art of construction.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE OBJECT AND WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL ?

A set of baking dishes I inherited from my grandmother. I say inherited, but mostly I needed baking dishes and there were many to choose from in her house. They aren't fancy or valuable. But I love to cook and they remind me of family dinners growing up and connect me to that shared history of caring for our loved ones through food.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO ?

My next trip. And the next one. And the next one. And all of the places I will see and experience.

WHAT DOES SUSTAINABILITY MEAN TO YOU ?

To me, sustainability is about thinking about the effects of our choices--on the environment, on the global economy, on one another. I am working to be much more conscious about the impact of my consumption. It's a real adjustment in mindset.

WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH FASHION ?

I've always loved expressing myself through clothes and my style has evolved as I've matured. The constraints of shopping as a woman with a larger body often forced me to be creative in adapting styles. I've often felt like, because designers didn't make clothes for me, that I wasn't allowed to dress the way I wanted. It's taken a long time to recognize that I deserve clothes that love me back by fitting well, moving with my life and aging with me.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS PIECE OF L’ENVERS ?

The Colette cardigan was the first L'Envers piece I fell in love with. It's just so versatile. It's a dress! It's a coat! It's a cardigan! I gasped the first time I saw it online and could immediately imagine half a dozen ways to style it, but I purchased two other pieces first. I've always struggled to find pieces that suit my proportions so I assumed this dramatic garment in a heavy knit just wouldn't work for me. It wasn't until I reached out with a sizing question about a different piece that I learned about the custom sizing option. It's a gift, truly. L'Envers makes truly heirloom garments, so the option to have one made to your measurements just reinforces their value. I will have--and wear--this piece for my whole life.
